1-Docosanol, or behenyl alcohol, is a big fatty straight-chain alcohol. It is frequently used in cosmetic and skin care products as an emollient, emulsifier, and thickener. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), which evaluates specific chemical compounds as they are used in cosmetic products, has determined that behenyl alcohol is safe. Behenyl alcohol is safe to use in cosmetics and personal care products, according to the CIR Expert Panel. However, like most preservatives, benzyl alcohol can irritate the skin and cause itching in some people.
Some of the most prevalent cosmetic components, such as lanolin, are typically derived from plants. There are many cosmetic formulations available in the market which contain behenyl alcohol. This compound is considered as safe for general usage, but there are still some contraindications involved.
As an opacifying agent, behenyl alcohol is used to reduce the clear or transparent appearance of cosmetic products. Moreover, behenyl Alcohol has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a pharmaceutical antiviral agent.
