Cell-free protein expression is a new trend in biotechnology. This process involves the use of antibodies to drive viral or bacterial infections out of cells and into the bloodstream. This results in fewer toxins entering the system and fewer side effects upon exposure to microorganisms. The benefits of this practice are being determined, however, and researchers have been testing various applications of cell-free protein expression for years.
One of the benefits of cell-free protein expression is that it allows researchers to develop vaccines, medicines, and therapies that require live virus components. Without this protein, it would be impossible to manufacture these medicines and drugs. Furthermore, since these proteins have to be kept living in order for them to work, there are strict guidelines to follow to ensure that the proteins remain stable and do not harm living cells. For instance, live viruses must be kept in cell culture before they can be injected into the body. Cell-free protein expression allows researchers to use healthy cells for experimental treatments. Since the protein may be mixed with other proteins, the body can still build new cells even when it is undergoing disease. This allows scientists to study any disease more aggressively.

Since the treatment will use the patient's own cells, there is no rejection of the cells that are part of the study. Plus, these treatments have been shown to improve the immune system's ability to fight off disease. Scientists are still looking at cell-free protein expression as a way to treat certain chronic diseases. They are also researching methods for introducing the protein into the body in small amounts so that the immune system can better respond to health problems. Recently, in April 2020, SwiftScale Biologics, a biomanufacturing company, announced that is focusing on a cell-free protein expression approach in the development of COVID-19 therapeutics by using glycoengineered bacteria.

In certain years, the vaccine was linked to an increase in Guillain–BarrĂ© syndrome among older people at a rate of about one case per million doses. Although most influenza vaccines are produced using egg proteins, they are still recommended as safe for people who have severe egg allergies, as no increased risk of allergic reaction to the egg-based vaccines has been shown for people with egg allergies. Vaccines produced using other technologies, notably recombinant vaccines and those based on cell culture rather than egg protein), started to become available from 2012 in the US, and later in Europe and Australia. Influenza vaccines are not recommended in those who have had a severe allergy to previous versions of the vaccine itself.The vaccine comes in inactive and weakened viral forms.
