2-octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives are used topically for primary closure of skin incisions and lacerations on the face, or it can be used in conjunction with deep sutures. Dermabond is a cyanoacrylate adhesive that forms a strong bond across apposed wound edges, allowing normal healing to occur below. Dermabond has various other benefits, but it is not always the best choice to close a wound. It is not indicated for use across mucocutaneous junctions (such as lips and oral cavity) or over mucosal surfaces. 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives are super strong adhesives which are categorized as wound glue or tissue glue. Thus, cyanoacrylate adhesives are widely used in domestic, medical, and industrial applications.
The cyanoacrylate is a class of strong, fast-action adhesives having diverse applications. They are mainly derived from propylene glycol and related compounds. The cyanoacrylate family in the monomer generates long, thin crystalline chains readily polymerized in water to become long, strong adhesive tapes. They have no significant toxicity. They are extensively used as an adhesive for manufacturing, household use, and surgery. Adhesive tape is particularly useful for temporary applications where easy removal is desired such as in medicine vials, bandages, diapers and packaging, without permanently damaging the packaging material.
The strength and stiffness of this type of adhesive depend upon the type of liquid, it is in contact with i.e. how much is available? The more available the cyanoacrylate the stronger it becomes. It is very useful in bonding and tapered seals. Two main types of cyanoacrylate adhesives are phenol and trimethylphenol. All other variants are generally less common and less effective than both the phenol and trimethylphenol group. 2-octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives have many applications and the choice largely depends on the properties required. These adhesives can be used for a wide range of applications where bonding requires extreme flexibility and strength, where high wear resistance is required.
They are good when used in applications requiring chemical resistance such as in automotive and electronics industries. One of the most important property of cyanoacrylate is its ability to bond with almost any substrate including metal and non-metal surfaces. Its chemical properties make it ideal for a variety of bonding applications including bonding metal parts to acrylic bases and other substrates. The ability of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives to bond with the bare skin makes it ideal for cosmetic bonding where the user want to enhance a design with as few markings as possible. 2-octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives also been used in dental bonding because of the ability of cyanoacrylate to bond with soft dental parts.
For these reasons cyanoacrylate is used for bonding dental crowns, prosthetic limbs, skin grafts, sclera (the lining of the throat), bone and tooth structure, muscle, tendon, and ligament bonding. However, the unique property of cyanoacrylate that makes it so useful in these applications is its chemical properties of being insoluble in water. So far, all adhesives known to science have one thing in common; they are insoluble in water. But since cyanoacrylate is soluble in water, it forms a semi-permeable membrane when applied to a surface that is exposed to water. This unique property allows the use of cyanoacrylate in a wide range of applications without concern over toxic or caustic reaction that can occur with other adhesives.

The popularity of 2-octyl cyanoacrylate adhesives has seen a dramatic rise in recent years with medical applications gaining popularity in many fields, such as sports medicine, dentistry, and dental bonding. Applications including sutures, bandages, and skin grafts have been commonly known for years and now with the availability of cyanoacrylate glues the process of applying these medical applications becomes faster and much more effective. Plus the ability of the cyanoacrylate to bond to a wide range of materials make it highly versatile in its uses. As more medical professionals use this versatile material, it will undoubtedly set the standard in other bonding adhesive materials.
