Anti-Suicide Drugs can be effective in reducing suicidal thoughts among individuals with depression and other mental disorders

Anti-Suicide Drugs

Although many people think that the best anti-suicide drugs are those that can help someone not to commit suicide, this is not always so. The effectiveness of suicide prevention drugs like antidepressants is dependent upon their individual effects on the body and brain. The type of antidepressant a person takes also depends on the type of suicidal thoughts that he or she may have. In order for an individual to determine whether he or she should take certain kinds of anti-suicide drugs or not, one must have a clear understanding of the different types of antidepressants and their effects on the body.
There are different kinds of antidepressants and the most common among them are tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). TCA are the ones used in most hospitals due to their ability to relieve the most common symptoms of depression. However, TCA has been known to cause other problems such as dizziness, nausea, and palpitations, so they are not necessarily the safest antidepressants. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are known for being an important part of the body's metabolism. This is the chemical substance that breaks down the harmful by-products of serotonin. However, when TCA and other TCAs increase serotonin levels, serotonin leaks into the bloodstream, which can then trigger suicidal thoughts and actions. Individuals with depression who are on medication for an extended period of time are also at high risk for suicide as they have less serotonin in their bodies. Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorders are also prone to suicide as they are constantly worried about certain things.
People who are on antidepressants and who have suicidal thoughts need to discuss these things with their doctors very carefully. They should not be afraid of expressing their feelings, since it is very important for them to get the proper treatment. Sometimes, those who are depressed may also be anxious or have some sort of phobia. Depression is just one of the symptoms that can lead to suicidal behavior. People with pre-existing mental health problems such as bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder are also at risk for suicidal thoughts. Anti-suicide drugs of this type can often help them alleviate their suicidal behaviors, however, in some cases, the medication can increase suicidal thoughts and actions. Psychotherapy is also helpful for treating these mental health conditions.

Another very common cause of suicidal thoughts is depression. Since a patient feels so depressed that he or she cannot think straight, this condition can worsen to the point that he or she will seriously consider ending his or her life. Treating depression is a very important step for stopping suicidal thoughts. Many patients will need therapy and some type of anti-depressant in order to treat this condition. Another category of medications is anti-seizure drugs. These can be used by people who are suffering from epilepsy and want to control their seizures. They also are very effective for stopping the involuntary movements of people suffering from Parkinson's disease. However, too many side effects have been reported with these medications and it is not clear how safe they are. Many of these anti-suicide drugs have also been found to increase homicidal thoughts in people taking them.
