Aviation Cyber Security

Aviation Cyber Security is a rapidly growing industry in the U.S. The aviation industry has greatly benefited from digitization and increased connectivity across its value chain. The cyber threats faced by the industry have resulted in a rapid and proactive response from industry leaders. Aviation Cyber Security professionals need the assistance and resources of these companies in order to remain competitive in this fast-changing business environment.
In order to effectively address the evolving threats to aviation cybersecurity, a wide range of aviation security companies are required. These include independent consultants, specialized vendors, and system integrators. All of these organizations bring different skill sets and capabilities to the table that can best protect the aviation ecosystem. The ultimate objective is to minimize the impact of any potential cyber threat to an aviation network. Any such threat must be identified and dealt with in a responsible manner before it can escalate to a full-blown threat to the integrity of the network.
The primary threats to UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) in the wild come from passive sources such as random attackers, insiders, or corrupt employees. These people have the ability to remotely operate UAVs, gain access and control the aircraft's systems, and do a lot more. When the infrastructure of the US Department of Defense is breached by an insider, the result is catastrophic. The unauthorized access to USEDs (unmanned aerial vehicles) by unauthorized personnel, while not necessarily compromising aviation systems, creates a significant risk to the aviation industry as a whole and, in some cases, can shut down operations completely.
The Aviation Cyber Security Strategy is aligned with other cyber-related ICAO efforts and backed by corresponding international security and safety management provisions. With these goals in mind, IATA supports the view of ICAO as being the best organization to drive forward consistent international dialogue and cooperation on Aviation Cyber Security. In addition, IATA looks to bolster its security partnerships across the globe, especially in Asia and Europe, to build a stronger global response to cyber-crime. IATA will continue to partner with stakeholders through its membership of the International Air Transportation Security Association (IATA).

As part of its efforts to improve air travel security, IATA has taken a number of strategic steps to build stronger ties with the international aviation industry. In particular, the airline industry has shown a lot of interest in improving its overall cyber risk management capabilities. It has also shown an eagerness to work with international organizations and partner with them in the fight against Aviation Cyber Crime. Given these encouraging developments, the association has decided to expand its current member list and launch two new strategic alliances. The creation of the Aviation Cyber Security roundtable was designed to increase awareness of the issues that exist in the aviation industry. In addition, the organization hopes that the creation of the forum can lead to greater participation by the different stakeholders in the aviation sector. This includes passengers, air traffic controllers, aviation manufacturers, and other large organizations that rely on the aviation industry. The purpose of this roundtable was to share information on how to manage cybersecurity in the aviation sector. This information sharing could help to identify where improvements might need to be made.
