From the beginning and even today, bicycles have been and are employed for many uses. Bicycles are widely used for transportation, utility cycling, and bicycle commuting. It can be used as a workhorse by general delivery services, messengers, mail carriers, etc. Moreover, bicycles are necessary to move people and goods to areas where there are few automobiles. The bicycle industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and this is attributed to many factors such as increasing demand and higher production rates. Currently, the overall demand for electric bicycles is increasing and is expected to become mainstream in the coming future. Electric bicycles are among the most popular of all bicycles today.
An electric bicycle is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor that can be used to aid propulsion. A variety of electric bicycles are available globally from e-bicycles (with only a small motor) to e-bikes (with moped-style functionality). Electric bicycles are known for their lightweight, compact, and affordable design. Basically, all electric bicycles today are e-bikes that take many of the features of traditional bikes but combine them into something that's much more compact and friendly to the environment. Aside, from the fact that they are quiet, pollution-free, and fuel-efficient, electric bicycles make great alternatives for cars and other forms of transportation as they offer the same amount of speed and performance.
Electric bicycles use rechargeable batteries (such as a lithium-ion battery) and the lighter ones can travel up to 16 to 20 miles per hour (25 to 32 km/h), depending on local laws, while the powered ones can travel up to 28 miles per hour (45 km/h) or more. Electric bicycles have been increasing in popularity as more people choose to ride them for various reasons. One of those reasons is because they are a good way to commute without having to use public transport which is not only nice but also saves you money in the long run. Another proof of e-bikes, as opposed to traditional bicycles, is that many of them can be ridden on flat terrain without any fear of hitting potholes or other rough surfaces. Interestingly, as much as 30% of all e-bike buyers today are individuals who never considered themselves as a serious cyclist in the past.
The ability of electric bicycles to manage the overall speed more adequately, provides the rider with the comfortable drive on tough roads, mountain areas, and overpasses. Moreover, several bicycle manufacturers are focused on introducing (or are introducing) a new range of electric bicycles to meet increasing the demand for electric bicycles. Furthermore, the shortage of parking space and growing traffic congestions, particularly in metropolitan cities, is prompting people to consider bicycles for short distances across cities. As a result, many governments worldwide are taking steps to reduce traffic congestion. For instance, in May 2020, the United Kingdom announced a US$ 2.6 billion plan (named ‘once in a generation’) to boost cycling and walking both during and after the lockdown. Around 300 million electric bikes will be out on the world's roads by 2023, which is 50% more than today.
