Emergence of Covid-19 and Initiatives to Halt Spread of the Pandemic to Boost Demand for Protective Clothing

Protective clothing is basically any apparel specifically made, designed or manufactured for protecting employees or healthcare professionals from hazardous conditions which are caused by an unsafe working environment or contagious conditions. There are different types of protective clothing that include, pads, guards, shields, or masks, and others. Some protective clothing can be specially designed to guard the employees from their working environment because of contamination or infection. Other types of protective clothing can protect against exposure to hazardous materials while at the same time providing comfort and ease of movement.

In workplaces that are highly toxic, chemical protective clothing should be worn. These garments provide safety from toxic fumes, vapors and aerosols. Toxins and gases from the workplace can cause serious health problems on direct contact. For this reason, people who work in such places are required to wear special clothing and equipment like disposable gloves, masks, respirators and breathing apparatus. Protective clothing as mentioned above comes in different types and strengths to match the different needs of the wearer. The protective clothing should also be tested according to various standards to ensure its effectiveness and suitability for the job. It should be made of materials that can resist chemicals used in the workplace; absorb poisonous liquids; prevent smoke, fire and sparks; and provide adequate traction for the worker. The protective clothing should also be leak proof and designed to be comfortable.
Emergence of Covid-19 has significantly increased demand for protective clothing. For instance, in the U.S., from January 3 2020 to 6:09 pm CET, 2 March 2021, there have been 28,294,809 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 509,645 deaths, as reported to the World Health Organization. Various organizations are focused on boosting the supply of essentials during the pandemic. In 2020, Bulgaria received over 7 tons of protective clothing under the upgraded European Mechanism for Civil Protection-rescEU
