Orthobiologics Find Application in Providing Excellent Care to Patients Suffering From Musculoskeletal Injuries and Sports Injuries

Orthobiologics are used in the treatment of various injuries such as fractures and injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These biological substances include, hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma, bone marrow aspirate concentrate, and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells. These biological substances are often made from substances that are naturally found in your body. High prevalence of orthopedic diseases has led to R&D in these biological substances. For instance, in July 2020, Kuros Biosciences, a developer of products for tissue repair and regeneration located in Schlieren (Zurich), Switzerland, Bilthoven, The Netherlands, and the U.S., announced that its Netherlands-based subsidiary, Kuros Biosciences BV, was granted the European patent for combinations of polymers and granular materials related to orthobiologics

Orthobiologics a novel treatment paradigm that has already established its success in providing excellent care to patients suffering from musculoskeletal injuries and sports injuries. In fact, this method was first practiced in the 1970s and has managed to become one of the most recognized modes of therapy throughout the world. These biological substances treat injuries by utilizing a unique and individualized approach towards rehabilitation based on an understanding that the cause of a certain health problem is biomechanical in nature. The treatment method believes that the underlying cause of injuries is not only a physical factor but also a mental or emotional factor, which explains why certain conditions are treated differently in some people than in others.
Autologous Conditioned Plasma (ACP) therapy is a potential orthobiologics and finds application in spinal fusion, chondropathy, knee osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, acute and chronic soft-tissue injuries, enhancement of healing after ligament reconstruction, and muscle strains. In the therapy, a small quantity of blood is extracted from a patient to extract healing factors using the process of centrifugation. However, use of ACP therapy is limited due to lack of reliable clinical evidence.
