Light and durable properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics makes it ideal for wide range of industrial applications

 


Carbon fiber is the lightest and strongest of the fabrics available today. This is one of the reasons that carbon fiber reinforced plastics are now commonly used in a variety of industries. Many people confuse this term with fiberglass, though there are several notable differences between the two. Unlike with fiberglass, there is no need to add any sealing agents or binders to the fabric during production. Also, unlike fiberglass, it does not need to be painted or treated in any manner.
One of the advantages of carbon fiber reinforced plastics is their high strength-to-weight ratio. It can withstand tremendous pressure, such as that experienced by tanks at sea. Because of this characteristic, the material is often used for tanks and pipes found in shipyards. This is also why the material is often seen on ladders and scaffold towers. The strength and durability of carbon fiber have made it popular for use in everything from boat hulls to the skeleton of airplanes.
Another advantage of carbon fiber reinforced plastics is that they can be woven into the most intricate designs, including bulletproof vests and bullet-resistant coats of paint. The material itself is highly resistant to corrosion and has very little effect on the surface it is applied to. However, some versions do coat the surface with a protective resin to prevent corrosion. In many cases, this coating is impermeable to liquids. Also, while the material is extremely lightweight, because of the way it is constructed, it does not have high compressive strength, which means that it should not be used in structures where extreme loads are applied.

They are extremely light-weight and can be compressed into a very small space. Carbon is able to be woven into very thin gauges of fiber, which makes it more likely to be used as an insulator. Some versions of the material are so light that they can be folded or compressed into tiny devices. All these features make the use of carbon in many applications both practical and useful.
