Tableware that is biodegradable or compostable is created from organic materials such as sugar, starch, cornstarch, rice, bamboo, and recycled newspaper. This tableware is thought to be a more environmentally friendly alternative to other throwaway tableware items. These materials, unlike plastic, do not contribute to the accumulation of plastic trash, making them a safer substance to use. Biodegradable tableware with segments is utilised in both commercial and domestic settings. On the other hand, if the raw material doesn't undergo any processing, the food substances will simply sink to the bottom of the pool and eventually decompose on their own.

There are two main reasons why biodegradable tableware has grown in favour. First, it contributes to a lesser carbon footprint, and second, because this sort of tableware has a longer shelf life, fewer packaging, and a lower price, it is an excellent approach to promote responsible consumerism. Furthermore, because biodegradable tableware may be used both commercially and at home, it has economic, environmental, and health benefits. Scientists at the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and System (NIIST) recently devised a technology for manufacturing 100 percent biodegradable dinnerware, including cups and dishes, in February 2021.

There are many biodegradable products available in the market such as sugarcane, vegetable oil, wood, aluminum, bamboo, and rice. For instance, wood chips, crushed walnut shells, and sugarcane residues make excellent compost for plant life. Similarly, vegetable oil, ceramic chips, bamboo, and rice residue make good materials for making biodegradable paper products and other household waste items. There are many reasons why using biodegradable tableware is a must for the holistic health of humans and our planet as a whole. As already mentioned, such products are not harmful to the environment in any way. Furthermore, biodegradable cutlery, dishware, cups, plates, tablecloths, etc. can be used repeatedly as they are completely recyclable. With such utensils, we can be assured of eating healthier as they help in preventing food-borne diseases and illnesses.
