Nail polish is a lacquer used to decorate both fingernails and toenails, as well as to protect the nail plates. It is made using various chemical compositions, such as resins, pearls, pigments, film formers, plasticizers, solvents, and thickening agents (such as stearalkonium hectorite) to bind other ingredients. Nail polish is available in multiple colors. However, nail polish contains hazardous/toxic chemical ingredients, such as dibutyl phthalate and toluene, which can affect human health adversely. Health risks, such as reproductive and chronic health problems, etc., are associated with nail polish products.
Thus, it is mandatory for cosmetic manufacturers to put a warning on the product about the potential health hazards that may result from using the product. Nail polish is simply a thick lacquer that is applied on the nail beds to protect and decorate the nail. The basic formula has constantly been revised periodically to improve its cosmetic results and to inhibit cracking or peeling. It is a man-made acrylic formula, composed of a base and a number of additives, which are applied on the nail bed with a manicure or pedicure. It can be applied on a cut nail as well. Nail polish can have a variety of cosmetic, medicinal, therapeutic, and preservative properties.
Nail polish is not bad for nails, there are some benefits of nail polish, other than the aesthetic. Nail polish prevents water from being absorbed and therefore can be protective. It may help remove that chipped manicure, but the ingredients, strong solvents, especially Acetone, dry out the nails. Moreover, it contains film-former such as nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate butyrate to make product hard and shiny when it dries. However, demand for nail polish has increased in the past few years due to the increasing number of nail salons and the increasing awareness about grooming among women.
