Point of care or PoC platform & technology refers to electronic devices that are part of the hospital's emergency preparedness plan. The premise underlying this technology is the belief that people who are at risk for medical problems are at the highest risk of acquiring those problems. Through effective communication between the patient and the health care provider, these patients can be alerted and treated rapidly. A point of care system helps to protect the patient's health by detecting, recording, and acting upon any potential threat.
PoC platform & technology refers to the use of highly specialized computer applications to perform many routine functions that were once performed by physicians and other healthcare professionals. These computer programs are designed to perform tasks that have previously been relegated to the hands of highly trained medical personnel. In many instances, such as in cardiac telemetry, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram (ECG), such computer programs can also detect potential problems before they become serious enough to necessitate medical intervention. As such, point of care diagnostic systems is very valuable to hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
PoC platform & technology is a growing field within health care technology. In recent years, many point-of-care systems have been manufactured and introduced onto the market. Such devices perform many functions that were previously performed by physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Some of these functions include direct contact with patients, automated data collection, improved communication between staff, enhanced laboratory analysis and diagnostic procedures, notification of various clinical components, and real-time data recording.
There are many benefits to implementing point of care software into the operational structure of a medical facility. One of these benefits is the reduction in staff time and stress that often comes with using outdated medical procedures. Another benefit is the reduction in billing errors that can result from incorrect medical procedures or tests. Many medical facilities have found that the productivity of employees who perform office duties is higher when compared to those who perform laboratory work. Employees who are required to perform office duties, such as filing or taking orders, spend less time on actual patient care. Furthermore, if the entire office is converted to use as a PoC platform & technology, there will be an immediate decrease in costs associated with patient transport, office supplies, equipment, and meals.
The vast majority of medical facilities are required to utilize such technology. It has also been found that the majority of individuals who visit a physician or a hospital are most impressed with those offices that use such modern technologies. Such systems have become so streamlined that certain procedures do not require the physician to take a step. The end result is a patient who is in a state of relaxation and calm, instead of having to be uncomfortable in a medical environment. This results in a significantly decreased occurrence of stress-related medical conditions.
PoC platform & technology provides information to the patient about their condition. This includes vital signs, blood pressure, and other clinical data. However, some newer technologies allow for information to be shared with other departments within the medical facility. This allows patients to get a basic understanding of their condition without also consulting another doctor. This has the added benefit of reducing medical errors that are the result of someone not knowing how their body is responding to a certain medical procedure. Many of the modern devices also provide the ability for patients to upload and exchange pictures with other visitors.
