Offshore Drilling rigs are one of the most important tools used by drillers for exploration purposes. An offshore oil platform, offshore rig, or offshore drilling unit is a high-tech structure with facilities to drill into, retrieve, refine, and process oil and natural gas which lies below the seafloor. In the U.S., the Bureau of Land Management manages onshore leases for offshore drilling. Drillers are required to lease these offshore drilling units based on their experience, equipment, safety guidelines, and environmental considerations. Offshore drilling is done for many reasons although mainly to find and extract oil.
There are many challenges inherent in offshore drilling. First, the location for drilling is vital as it determines the depth at which the well will be accessed. A good location would yield a well that is deep enough to catch all the fractures that occur in the Earth's crust during earthquakes. Areas experiencing tectonic activity or water movements are also prime locations because they give access to undersea fractures, as well as geothermal heat and precipitation. Since oil production is dependent upon water being present, geologists often study the Earth's composition and structure to predict where oil will be found.
One of the most popular types of Offshore Drilling rigs used today is the type that operates in a reservoir. This type of drilling equipment is known as a "wellbore drill" and is capable of producing both oil and gas. Offshore activities continue across the globe in both developed and emerging economies. Countries such as Germany, Japan, and Mexico have witnessed a surge in offshore drilling activities over the years. For instance, new drilling projects have been commenced in Germany as well as in Japan. The drilling project in Japan is aimed at evaluating the presence of oil and natural gas in the area. The location of exploration is around 50 kilometers offshore of the Hidaka area of Hokkaido, Japan.
