Diagnostic Mammography Is One of the Most Requested Breast Imaging Procedures for Patient Groups Worldwide

Breast Imaging Procedures and Techniques: Diagnostic mammography is one of the most requested procedures for the patient group. A preoperative diagnosis of lesions within the breast is imperative to obtaining conclusive diagnosis and treatment. During the procedure, a minimally invasive technique called percutaneous breast biopsy is performed. This technique utilizes an instrument called a speculum to obtain a tissue sample from the deep layers of breast tissue. Special instruments and special techniques are used during the percutaneous breast biopsy to obtain images and information on the anatomy, abnormal tissue distribution and location, and response to treatment.
Mammography is another highly requested diagnostic procedure. Mammography is the process of taking pictures of abnormal breast tissue to diagnose cancerous changes in the breast. Mammography is often used as a screening tool, but it is also utilized to obtain information about benign tumors. Since most women with a breast tumor do not experience symptoms, mammography is often used as a complementary procedure to surgical breast removal or as a follow up to radiation therapy for breast tumor staging.

Another highly requested diagnostic procedure is ultrasound guided breast imaging. Ultrasound guided breast imaging is similar to mammography in that the tissue is examined using an instrument, usually a speculum or laparoscope, that holds a thin plastic tube called a cannula. Using ultrasound technology, the patient is placed inside the tube and a high-powered ultrasound probe is positioned over the breast. The probe produces a series of high frequency sound waves that are reflected back to the scanner and are captured by the instrument.
