Automotive Flywheel; Helps Maintain Rotating Mass (Inertia) to Keep the Car's Engine Running

Automotive Flywheel

Automotive flywheel provides mass for rotational inertia to keep the car's engine running. It is a mechanical device designed to store the rotational energy. In automobile engines, automotive flywheel serves to smooth out the pulses of energy provided by the combustion in the cylinders and to provide energy for the compression stroke of the pistons. A flywheel is designed to use the conservation of angular momentum so as to store rotational energy efficiently; a form of kinetic energy that is proportional to the moment of inertia and square of its rotational speed.
In order to understand how a flywheel works, one must first understand how an automatic transmission works. In an automatic transmission, the driveshaft, the engine, and the clutch all engage with one another. The transmission fluid flows into the engine, and this is then ignited by the vehicle's transmission bellows. The bellows blow out compressed air which then fills the casing of the automotive flywheel. The power supplied by the flywheel then moves the transmission shaft, which rotates a number of gears and blanks called guides on the engine.
Moreover, due to the increasing demand for fuel efficient vehicles, automotive manufacturers are increasingly adopting duel mass flywheels to reduce the weight of the engine, as well as to enhance fuel efficiency by developing lightweight components. Dual mass flywheels can be used in both new turbo gasoline and diesel engines. Furthermore, demand for the automotive flywheel has increased due to the increasing adoption of Dual clutch transmission (DCTs), continuously variable transmission (CVTs), and automated manual transmission (AMTs).

In 2020, passenger vehicle sales in Germany amounted to around 2.9 million units. While, in Japan, Toyota was the leading car manufacturer in 2020, sold around 1.45 million vehicles during the same period. Thus, with the increasing production and sales of passenger vehicles, the demand for automotive flywheel is also increasing with a rapid pace.
