Orthopedic splints and casts are orthopedic therapeutic devices used to support and protect injured bones and tendons. Splints and casts are typically made from plaster or fiberglass and may be molded into the appropriate shape of injured legs or arms. The casts are primarily designed to give added functional support to severe fractures and other soft tissue injuries, enabling increased flexibility and movement with minimal partial mobility, as well as longer, more even healing with a semi-rigid structure.
When an injury results in a deformed cast or splint, many doctors prefer the use of orthopedic splints instead of traditional braces to correct the problem. Depending on the severity of the injury, it may also be possible to use orthopedic braces instead of a cast. These braces are similar to cast braces, although they can be molded to fit the exact shape of the wearer's arm. While braces are generally worn for extended periods of time, orthopedic splints need to be worn only while the patient is under anesthesia. While these braces are less cumbersome than a cast, they are still considered a form of braces by some.

Both orthopedic splints and cast straps provide the wearer with the opportunity to improve strength, mobility, and range of motion through traction. Traction is often used to help alleviate pain, prevent recurrences, as well as improving bone function. Orthopedic casts help prevent trauma to surrounding structures and promote the healing of fractures and other problems. When casting, these splints prevent excessive stretching of the ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The primary benefit of orthopedic braces is their ability to prevent injury to bones, tendons, muscles, ligaments, and joints. Recently, in February 2021, Breg Inc., a U.S.-based provider of orthopedic bracing, launched two new lines of spinal orthoses Pinnacle and Ascend.
