Medical Tourism on Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery focuses on enhancing appearance through surgical and medical techniques. While the procedure for cosmetic surgery is generally safe, there are some risks that people should know about. Cosmetic surgery is relatively inexpensive and the benefits to the patient are often very great. Although not every patient is guaranteed a perfect result from cosmetic surgery, it is well worth the investment in terms of satisfaction and the fact that your appearance will look drastically better.
The medical tourism w.r.t cosmetic surgery is booming. The most popular cosmetic procedure is liposuction, followed by breast reduction and rhinoplasty. Although these procedures are popular, it is important to note that not everyone who undergoes cosmetic surgery travel to the same country or destination, and therefore some of these are not covered under health insurance policies. India is emerging as a new hub for medical tourism. According to India Brand Equity Foundation’s January 2019 release, the estimated Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India on medical purpose during the years 2015, 2016, and 2017 were 2,33,918, 4,27,014, and 4,95,056 respectively. Another hotspot for medical tourism is Latin America. According to the study, ‘Medical Tourists: Incoming and Outgoing, published in January 2019 in the American Journal of Medicine, Mexico is among the top 10 destinations for medical tourism.
Many cosmetic surgery procedures can involve the use of pharmaceuticals, either with invasive or non-invasive procedures, which is one of the major reasons why patients choose a cosmetic procedure. According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2019 report, 16,349,031 cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures were reported in 2019 compared to 16,090,952 in 2018. Pharmaceuticals can be administered through IV and injection. These medications are administered on an outpatient basis, so if a patient experiences an allergic reaction or gets the wrong medicine, they can simply be taken back to the hotel and got another prescription. When surgeons carry out any type of surgical procedure, they are required to use specialized surgical equipment. This equipment can be expensive and some surgeries cannot be performed with certain equipment.
Cosmetic surgery has been around for a long time, but medical tourism is making it more accessible to patients. The medical tourism industry is booming because people are becoming more concerned about their health and want to spend money in ways other than just buying medical products. According to a 2018 survey by GlobalData, around three quarters of South Korean men undertake a beauty or grooming treatment at least once a week. Medical tourism gives patients the chance to be with doctors that they trust and to feel comfortable with, rather than just seeing them in a clinic. Some patients choose to have cosmetic surgery at a private clinic, but most opt for a local plastic surgeon because they can visit and be with their doctors on a daily basis. Some patients have reported feeling a sense of security when they have a qualified doctor, they can call when they need the services of a surgeon. Many people feel more comfortable when they know they have a personal physician to ask questions and make appointments with and they know where they can find help with any concerns or issues they may have during surgery.
Some patients prefer to be in the privacy of their own home and are satisfied with the results when they choose to have cosmetic surgery through medical tourism. Many people feel less embarrassed about going through the cosmetic surgery procedures because they feel more confident in the surgeon and their decision. However, others are more concerned with the fact that their money is going to a professional rather than using a general practitioner that does not care as much about their patients as they should.
