Medical Imaging Devices; Used To Diagnose, Monitor, or Treat Medical Conditions

 


Medical imaging devices are used to diagnose various critical disorders and diseases of vital organs such as brain, heart, lungs, and liver. Positron emission tomography (PET), ultrasound, fluoroscopy, echocardiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and Radiography (X-rays) are some of the most widely used medical imaging devices. Imaging devices produce 2D or 3D images of anatomical structures to detect abnormalities.

With the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and traumatic injuries, the number of imaging procedures, such as MRI and CT, is also increasing. In 2019, around 128 MRI and 279 CT exams per 1,000 inhabitants were performed in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.
Medical imaging refers to the method and practice of visual representations of the internal structure of a human body for medical diagnosis and medical treatment, and also visual inspection of the functioning of any selected organs or tissue. Through the help of specialized equipment, patients are able to view the status of their health and the nature of their ailment, which helps them in taking timely and appropriate action to overcome their problems.

A large number of imaging techniques or devices are available today for different kinds of purposes. X-rays and ultrasound are two of the most widely used medical imaging devices for detecting and monitoring various medical conditions. Moreover, the field of medical imaging has experienced tremendous growth over the years, and there are many new and advanced medical imaging devices available in the market today for better understanding of the human body. This enables doctors to detect abnormalities and diseases at an early stage and treat the same, reducing the chances of death and thus improving the quality of life.
